router security, just wondering
being behind a router provides a certain amount of security, understood...
question... does being behind multiple routers provide xtra security? if so, how many routers can be between your comp & the modem & still work properly... at what point (# of routers) does the security benefits diminish, if at all?

One router is plenty - that gives you IP address translation. Any more than 2 would probably slow things down a lot.

yes 1 is plenty, two are better, butt to cure my curiosity, how many can physically be connected & still work in a usable way?
will any amount be capable of completely eliminating infiltration by a hacker/unsolicited pinging. no, i'm not about to go out & buy a truck load of routers, even if it does work. it just happened to have peaked my curiosity & thought you mite know. i will google round a bit to see, butt i prefer your input, glc... thanx again |

2 is not any better, and will just cause you problems. Theoretically you could have about 16 million or more of them in a line if you knew what you were doing with the IP addresses, but the speeds would be quite terrible.

In your case it's to secure the 2 downstream routers from each other, but it won't offer any additional protection from the internet. The problems it could cause is when you need to be accessible to the internet, such as port forwarding to host a game or ftp server, etc. So, not big problems, but if you had no reason for multiple routers (and you DO have a reason), it's not worth it.

Thanks! We adopted a new kitten from the shelter about a month ago, she's even cuter.

ps... does this mean i mite have problems with online banking & such using the 'Y' config? i guess that means the bank won't recognize my comp, so i'll have to always answer those security questions to log on... Last edited by Blaster3; 12-11-2008 at 07:57 PM. |

I don't think that will affect online banking, I believe that's cookie-based.

No, it won't affect online banking. It will only affect you at times when you are acting as a server, which for most people is never.
