No idea how to set up network hard drive!

I bought this today...

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/pro...ORK-HARD-DRIVE

The problem is that I am having absolutely no luck getting it to work at all.

When I run the supplied software and try to open the network hard drive all I get is...

"Access to network resource is denied"

The documentation that comes with the unit is terrible.

Help!

Beats me. The specs don't indicate an Ethernet connection so I don't see how that could be a *specific* network hard drive. Uninstall the software, make sure it's recognized in the computer it's connected to, and use standard Windows file sharing to make it available to other computers, just like you would an internal drive.

It's definately ethernet if you scroll down the following...

http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-33455-E.../dp/B000UOBJ5G

I'm having a great deal of difficulty because I've never attached a hard drive to a router so I'm not quite sure exactly what I'm trying to do.

As I said, the documentation amounts to a booklet with a few lines each in about 50 languages.

I forgot to avoid Iomega gear after my Zip drive click of death many years ago. Argh!

Try to get into the harddrive's web configuration page and look for settings or instructions there. You may have to put your computer into a static IP in order to be in the same subnet as the default address that the drive has until you can change it to fit into your network.

Did you read the user manual on the CD? Forget the booklet.

I think this is where I would start, do you know the IP address of the harddrive? forget the crappy software that comes with them, the WD LifeBooks are equaly as bad.

Should not apply if it's connected to a router, Claude.

Is the name of the workgroup "WORKGROUP" on all the computers that you want to access it? Do you have any shares set up on it? Have you added any users? Have you read the manual on the CD yet?

George, the HTML manual that comes with the CD is really poor and not very imformative.

Anyway, I have had success!

Not quite sure why it's now working but it is - on both my XP netbook and Vista desktop - never done anything different.

Only real problem I'm having now is that on reboot, both computers don't remember the network hard drive and I have to re-run the Iomega Discovery Tool software. Can this problem be rectified?

You need to set up SMB shares on the drive from the web interface. SMB is the standard windows file-sharing protocol.
