Similar wireless router problem
I've been following the thread started by JockRod on 4/26 regarding his laptop not being able to communicate with the wireless router - as I've been having the same problems.
Older router - DLink DI 524 802.11g, 2.4Ghz. I've had an Acer Pentium dual core laptop with b/g wireless (Broadcomm) for about a year that works well with the router - occasionally slowing to a crawl or not communicating at all, with 100% signal strength/connected status. Reboot the router, and it's good to go. This doesn't happen often, but seems to be more likely when my son brings his Dell and is connected at the same time. The Dell has never had the problem. (Dell running XP, Acer running Vista) Now, I buy a new Lenovoi / Pentium dual core / Vista / Broadcomm wireless, and it shows great signal strength/full connection - will pull up the homepage, but can't communicate beyond that. Maintains full signal and connection, but pages not found. Diagnostics say that it's not able to connect to the internet, check firewall settings. Compared the settings with the Acer - sameo, sameo. If the Acer is connected and working, opening the browser on the Lenovo knocks them both out. I haven't tried the new Lonovo on any other wireless setup - will try that soon. I did go ahead and order a new Trendnet draft N 2.0, as I was thinking about stepping up anyway. In looking at routers, I noticed that some reviews of DLink and Trendnet models ranted about losing connection repeatedly, having to reboot the router. Fortunately, there are also many positive reviews of these, so I hope I'm not buying into more of the same problem. I did disable IPv6, but it made no difference, and the Acer has it enabled and works well. The router is old enough that it no longer has tech support, and the firmware revision is 2-3 years old, and I've already done that. My experience with wireless networking is that it can be more frustrating than the old blue screen of death, and if you want something fickle, try wireless. I'm just looking to learn more about these systems and hardware/software in general, so any resources provided will be appreciated. As I indicated, I'm purchasing a new router, so hopefully that will solve my problems, but I'm old enough to prefer trying to diagnose and fix problems rather than just replacing components (I drive a carbureted, non-computerized car, made of steel). Thanks for any input. Love these forums - just like to log on and read for the fun of it as well. TA |

Just replace the router. They don't last forever.

Do you have the latest firmware on the router? I used to have similar symptoms on my DI-524 until I got this firmware release.
