Cannot connect to the Internet on the Dell 8400
Oh Gawd, I hate having to ask another question.
Finally I got my Dell 8400 back running after installing a new motherboard, power supply and new hard drive. I was able to install the Windows XP Pro OS on the machine (Thanks again GLC!) and all I have left to do is connect to the Internet. Not so easily done for me however. We have a wireless home network that connects my newly built computer to the web (using an ethernet cable) connected to a Time Capsule, and a Mac Notebook using wireless. Both computers work fine, as does the Time Capsule. I want to connect the Dell up using wireless and am having a lot of trouble. Before the motherboard failed I had the Dell connected to the Time Capsule via wireless and I could even print to the shared printer. Now that is no longer the case. The Dell has a Trendnet TWE-645UB Wireless N USB Adapter attached and the software is loaded. I use a Time Capsule as the network wireless router. Our home service is SBC with a DSL hook up. I had loaded the SBC software, but that gave me trouble so I uninstalled it. It kept directing me toward setting up a connection using dial up service. Do I need to reinstall the SBC software? Yeah, I know.....duh....... I feel dumb to ask, but then I guess I am dumb. The Dell shows up as being connected to the Time Capsule with a 96% signal strength. ( I have it sitting 3ft away) I cannot get out to the Internet. I even plugged one end of an Ethernet cable into the Dell and the other end into the modem and still cannot get on the web. There must be something I missed with the replacement of the motherboard and hard drive? I had trouble with those items before I discovered I needed a SATA Controller driver. After that was found and put on a floppy the Dell found the hard drive and loaded the XP OS without a hitch. Anyone have an idea of what I might try here? Jeeze, it's difficult to even have to ask, but I am really at the desperation point with this. ![]() Thanks....... pg |

Did you reinstall all needed drivers from the Dell Resource CD or the Dell support website? The first driver that needs to be installed is the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. Everything else depends on that. You will need the Broadcom 57XX driver for the Ethernet port to work. |

GLC, you have done it once again!
I had tried to install the SBC before you posted and was not successful because it found no connection. I removed all of the SBC garbage except for 1 item that refused to be removed. I D/L the driver and the Intel Chipset Utility you said I needed and installed those. Instantly I was able to print using the shared printer connected to the Time Capsule. That was real progress. I get a message that 'the printer is not responding as it starts to print. I can live with that. Still could not connect to the Int net and asked my wife to take a look. She opens the Dell network under 'connections and it says connect with..... DSL She then opens the same page on the new build and it says connect with..... Blank space. She then highlights DSL on the Dell and clicks Remove'. ZAP! We can now connect to the Internet. I suppose the SBC item that refused to be removed was that DSL under connect with. I would have never found that. Thanks again for all of the fine help you have provided me with. I really appreciate it..... pg |
