COX internet

So I'm moving to Arizona for a job and I am forced into Cox Cable for my internet. They are requiring I either provide my own modem or buy one from them for $59.95. This also means that if the modem goes kaput, it's my responsibility.

Does anyone know of a good modem for possibly cheaper than the one they're offereing? The service I'm selecting is the 12Mbps one.

Note: I already have a wireless router, so no routing functionality is needed.

Thanks.

I've been using a D-Link DCM 202 3 years now -- works great, and very affordable. Do note that if they offer you telephone service and you're planning on getting that (i.e. their version of VoIP telephone service) you are probably best off going with the modem that is provided.

I agree with floppyman on the d-link. If you can find that one for a good price it's a fine modem. I also used it for a few years with no issues until I got phone service from the cable company and had to use their modem. (Plus, my cable company took the opposite approach to ending the modem rental practice; they just let us use their modem for free ) I then gave the d-link to my sister who uses Cox and she has had no problems with it. Just from searching newegg for cable modems, this one looks like the best deal to be had. Motorola makes solid modems and this one is much cheaper since it doesn't have pretty retail packaging. If you're into more technical details... This Motorola SB5101 is the update/replacement for the SB5120, which was also a fine modem. The d-link dcm 202 uses the exact same chipset from texas instruments as the SB5120, and is usually much cheaper (at least it was back when floppyman and I bought it.)

I was actually looking at that Motorola one on Newegg too. I think I'll just go ahead and pick that one up.

Thanks.
