Real time protection

I just realized that Real Time Protection was still turned on in Windows Defender.
I also have Avast AV and these items are turned on...IM, Internet Mail, Network Shield, P2P Shield, Standard Shield, and Web Shield. Is this OK, or should I turn something off ? If so, what should I turn off. Running Vista Ultimate. Thanks, Mike
PS....I just checked MSCONFIG to see what was running at startup. There was NO check mark in the box next to Windows Defender, sooo
I guess nOTHING concerning Defender was running ???
