I have no idea
Okay,so we connect to the net through dsl from att with this-2Wire DSL Gateway Model 2701HG-B. I bought and installed a wireless adapter for the wifes `puter in the other end of the house. She is standing behind me patting her foot and telling me she was right, "you don`t know what your`re doing" She`s right, can someone help me save my dignity?

By default, a 2Wire uses 64 bit WEP security, the 10 digit security code is on the barcode sticker on the bottom of it.

I do have those numbers but I`m not sure I have everything I need. Is the Gateway from ATT the modem AND the router? ( I thought it was). I have our regular puter hooked into that and put the wireless adapter in the other puter. The adsapter shows up on that one but the icon says it is disconnected. I tried to read and figure this out but as you can tell I an LOST. I hope the new 1TB external hdd I bought goes easier than this...

You have to view available wireless networks. Yours will be 2Wire with the last 3 digits of the serial number. When you try to connect, it will ask for the key.

I'm sorry if I do not understand this... Could you be a little more specific on what exactly you are trying to do here? I understand that you are trying to install the wireless router, but it would help if you were being more specific.
How many PC's are you trying to hookup? Do you have onboard wireless cards on your systems already? Are you keeping one or more PC's wired from the router? etc, etc...

The 2701HG is already a wireless router - why are you trying to use a Linksys too?
You can't daisy chain 2 routers together without special configuration that is not addressed in the documentation. The Linksys is designed to connect to a modem, not a modem/router combo. Last edited by glc; 07-03-2009 at 03:01 AM. |

I have two pc`s, I am trying to use a second one with a wireless card that I installed and haven`t seen a problem with except I cannot make it connect. The only thing I AM proficient at is typing credit card numbers in. I installed extra ram in #2 puter and the wireless card, it all seems fine. I THOUGHT the 2701hg was a wireless router but between me and my wife I convinced myself that I needed the Linksys. Pay special attention to the idiot reference and you will better understand the problems I am having. I will gladly use the Linksys as a paperweight if I can get Momma`s `puter (#2) online.

I have merged your 2 threads. Why didn't you ever follow up on the original thread where I was trying to help you get connected?
1. What brand and model is the wireless adapter? 2. What operating system is on the computer? 3. Any comments on my post #4? 4. Am I speaking Greek? |

glc, thanks for merging the threads, and no greek. I have all the numbers and thought I had put them in and set it up etc. but nothing seems to work. The `puter has windows 98 on it. The wireless card I installed is a iMicro nt-pc154m, I probably have everything as far as equip. wrong but I don`t know.

I can view available networks, it shows two, one with no numbers or anything and one with a different 2WIRE### than what I think I should be using. Are these the neighbours connections or is mine in there hiding? There is a dialog (?) box and it says status is not associated. The adapter icon down by the clock tells me the adapter is disconnected. Make sense?

The 2Wire # is the last 3 digits of the serial number. This is separate from the 10 digit WEP key. If you don't see your network in the utility, you need to log into the 2Wire and check the wireless settings, it may be turned off.
Even if you do get it associated, Windows 98 is a pain in the butt to get the wireless working on anyway. You will have to use a static local IP, because Windows 98's DHCP client will time out before the card can associate after every startup. Last edited by glc; 07-03-2009 at 03:46 PM. |

I have the numbers needed and have been putting them in any box that will let me. The adapter utility will show networks available but if I try to make a profile and put the numbers in it won`t work. I have the numbers...I just can`t find a network or whatever it is I am missing.

Does it show YOUR network as being available? If not, your wireless is probably turned off or not configured in the router!

1. Delete that profile.
2. Log into the 2Wire interface with your wired computer and review your wireless settings. Turn SSID Broadcast *ON* and verify that the WEP key is still set to default. 3. What are the last 3 digits of your 2Wire serial number? |

Delete that. Then open this screen: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...f/screen3a.jpg Look for 2Wire609, join it. When successful, save it as your default profile. |

I think we are going to be okay for the fireworks. This stuff is clearing out and moving east, the rain has stopped here. My stepdaughters (x2) and grandkids (x6) live here too. Having a BBQ at one of their places this evening, then walking over to Landreth Park for the fireworks tonight, it's only a few blocks.

I may be able to come to Joplin and watch my grandkids pop the fireworks too now that I (we) got Mommas` `puter online (she`s working today until midnight), thanks again for your help! Bud.
