Replacing VOIP Cable Modem
My family has Time Warner Cable and we get a bundled package for phone, internet access, and cable tv.
My question is about the Cable Modem they gave us. It's a Webstar and to be honest I think it's a piece of junk. It looks cheap and I swear that many of our problems with internet access is related to this modem. Unfortunately the cable provider offers no alternatives through them. The modem has the RJ10/11 outlets on it for two lines (we only have one), but wherever I search i can only find Cable modems with USB out or Ethernet. Nothing with the phone built into it. I found some online but they look specific to the VOIP provider and I am not sure if they would be compatible. Does anyone have any experience with this? You do have to use a modem compatible with their system. You can't just use any old cable modem. If you didn't have your phone through it, that would be a different story.

I was just under the impression that all VoiP services operated the same way. So similar hardware might be interchangeable.
Thx |

Scientific Atlanta/Cisco is a fine brand actually. What is making you think that the modem is responsible for any problems you're having? I think some good old fashioned troubleshooting is the first thing to do.

a couple of things:
1) VoIP modems are usually specific to the service provider and flipping one in and the other out carries some risk (at best it won't be supported, at worst it just plain old won't work) 2) have you discussed with your cable company about replacing it (your current modem might be defective).

I guess I will leave it alone for now since we haven't had any recent issues. Thx for the info.

Question:
Can I purchase my own Internet cable modem? Answer: Yes. While you may purchase your own Internet cable modem, Time Warner Cable provides the modem when subscribing to our Internet service. There may be a nominal charge for this modem in some service areas. If you still want to purchase your own modem, it must be Docsis-compliant and Time Warner Cable cannot guarantee its performance. http://www.timewarnercable.com/dalla...y-own-Internet Question: What cable modems can be used with the Road Runner service? Answer: Click here for a list of approved cable modems that can be used with the Road Runner service. http://www.timewarnercable.com/dalla...s-can-be-used-

Steve, this is not just standard cable service - this is the package with phone service that uses a telephony modem.
