Petcam, UPnP, Port Forwarding

So I got one of those petcams so I can access a view of the dining room when the cat (usually the culprit) sets off the burglar alarm system.

The instructions say to allow UPnP on the router. Ok, I know nothing about this stuff, but everything I read says this is a big security risk. The alternative seems to be to use Port Forwarding, but it seems that is risky too.

Which is least risky? I'm going to read all the help pages I printed out from Panasonic (maker of the petcam), but can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks for any advice or pointers you can provide !

Happy 4th to all .

I feel more comfortable using port forwarding, as opposed to UPnP. When i set up port forwarding I choose a port other than the default of the app, or software I'm running. I don't know about petcam, but you might be able to select a port some where in the preferences. Also use a static IP for the computer receiving the feed.

I don't see where any kind of UPnP or port forwarding will be needed if you are on the same LAN as the camera..........

GLC, right, I can see the cam while I'm on the network. This is to forward the feed to a web address that would be accessible from a work computer, smartphone, etc.
