Question new network with router can't get into other pc

i just set up a linksys 4 port router to split the cable access to my two pc's. i ran the install on the network cards and the internet works fine. and i can see both sys in network neighborhood but can't see any contents, all blank. i have tcp/ip and client for microsoft and file and print sharing protocols loaded and both sys set to share files. both have the same workgroup and one is id'd as number 1, the other number 2 to keep it simple. i noticied that netbois [or whatever] is not listed in the protocols list. is this what i'm missing to access the pc's from each other. do i copy it off of the win98 cdrom or what. sure is great to have internet in different places for when the kids get on their pc.

Hi,

Go ahead and try to install the netbeui protocol and use it for filesharing (i.e. uncheck filesharing from tcp/ip, but leave it checked for netbeui) to see if this helps with your filesharing problems. Hope this helps.

i tried installing netbeui on both pc's and it didn't help. i tried to disable file sharing in tcp/ip and then i couldn't access the network at all. both protocols need to have file sharing to be able to see the pc's in network neighborhood. i can't even see anything inside the pc i'm using when i try to search it through network neighborhood. happily the cable modem works on both pc's although i found it odd that roadrunner required a username and password on the account but the router works without the pppoe [username and password] enabled and internet access is fine.

I had problems with NETBEUI running with the Linksys. I run TCP/IP only. Make sure you have your drives shared and that both machines are in the same workgroup.

i origionally had only tcp/ip and under file and print sharing i chose to share files but not printers. i can see the pc icons in network neighborhood but can't access any files inside them. netbuei didn't help either. i have microsoft file and print sharing protocol loaded along with tcp/ip and netbuei etc.

Wink

p.s. i'm using the default WORKGROUP and the pc's are named by their motherboard which shows up on the icons in network neighborhood and the description is 1 and 2 respectfully.

But have you gone to the drives or folders that you want to share, right click on them, then click on sharing?

Hi,

Yes, now you need to specify which folders/disk drives etc. you actually want to share. To do that, just right click on an item and go to sharing, and set the rest up from there. Hope this helps.

Thumbs down

oh nutz... well i spoke too soon. i got pc 2 to work for a moment and then it got weird so i went to 1 and it wouldn't so i removed netbeui from 1 and it worked. then i removed netbeui from 2 and now i'm screwed. running the same protocol adapter and tcp/ip adapter as 1 and 2 won't even see ANY network period, [the old waving flashlight routine] i found aol dialup and adapter entries in device mgr messed so not needing aol dialup anymore, i deleted it in device mgr. the other protocols and tcp/ip adapters check ok for op and drivers etc. i still have the aol adapters on 1 which still works on the network neighborhood. could the loss of network neighborhood on 2 be related to aol missing???

AOL is famous for screwing up networks - you may have to uninstall all your network components and AOL and reinstall them.

Question

this may be a possible fault. i located a backdoor virus in my winadmin.exe file and deleted it. i tried to find the file by browsing the sys disc but couldn't find it. i forgot to try file find searching the d drive to locate it. will try that soon. question is...does the winadmin file help run the network? my pc seems to function ok otherwise.

Seems to me winadmin.exe IS the virus. You need to go to Symantec or Trend Micro or someone to make sure you follow the COMPLETE removal instructions for that particular virus.
