Cant connect to internet with diffrent NIC
Heres the deal. Ive got a comp with a cable connection and my bro has a comp with a phone modem to connect to the internet. I put a nic in his comp so that we can lan out some games. I want to reinstall windows on his comp and use the nic on his comp so that I can temporarily connect his comp to the internet through my cable modem so that I can get the latest windows updates, update av software, etc. But his comp wont respond when connected to my cable modem. Is there something that I need to do so that it will connnect? Is there something unique about my nic like a mac address or something?

Probably not the mac address. More than likely it is the computer name and/or IP address. Depends on how your cable company allocates IP addresses. Some do use mac addresses, but most do not. Just configure the name and ip like yours and it should work. BTW, how come you won't share your cable connection with your brother?

Im noy trying to connect his comp while mine is connected. Im disconnecting my cable modem from my comp and hooking it up to his. Our comps arent on a network just yet. I ran winipcfg and the ip address his nic is diffrent from what my ip address is. Should I go into the network settings and change his ip address to what mine is? What about subnet mask and those other technical things I know nothing about?
BTW I dont want him sharing my connection becuase I dont want my ping in quake 3 to go to hell because he is doing stupid stuff like downloading eminem mp3s.

Yes, change his to your settings. Don't forget to take notes so you can put it back like it was when you are done.

Right. It will have to be put back to the setting he uses for his dial up account or it will not work.
