Wifi problem
Hi there
Hopefully someone can help me... I am running windows vista and my laptop has inbuilt wifi capabilities using an Atheros AR5007UG Wireless Network Adapter. I have a broadband router with is a standard Livebox issued by Orange. I can connect using an ethernet cable to the Livebox, but I am having problems with wifi. Although my laptop can see the box to connect to, on pressing connect, it simply says windows cannot connect to the box. I have tried the following: 1) having no security on the box to make sure I'm not typing in the WPA key incorrectly 2) changing the output wifi channel from 1 to 10 or 11 I am also aware that I need to ensure that the box is in pairing mode in order for it to connect. I have my iPhone successfully connected to the Livebox, and have previously successfully connected my laptop (but not for a while, and have been "making do" with a cable connection). When I go to ipconfig, it says that the media state of the LAN adapter wireless connection is "Media disconnected" but I'm not sure if this is relevant or not. Any ideas gratefully received as I've spent hours trying to fix this! Cheers Catherine |

The first step would be to make sure you have the latest drivers for the wifi adapter. I've seen many cases where older drivers don't properly support newer access points, especially in the area of encryption.

Hi Matt
Thanks for your reply... I updated the driver for the wifi adapter today in an attempt to rectify the problem - so all should be up to date. In any case, I've had the whole system working previously (on the old driver), so I would presume that it couldn't be an old driver issue (although I could be wrong!). Catherine |

In the past I have had problems with Windows update corrupting the Atheros drivers of my Toshiba laptop even though I never let Windows update to update drivers for any hardware

reply to wireless problem
Make sure that you are geting good signal strength, move your laptop around in the room
close to the wireless router and check the signal strength. Restart your laptop and your wireless router and see if you are able to connect to it using Wi-fi. If still you face problem connecting to the wireless router using wi-fi then their must be something wrong with the wireless service of your broadband router. |
