I think it's Norton...
Just did a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit, upgraded from Vista 32 bit. Have been running since the release date. My computer has been unstable with random crashes and running very slow at times. I think it may be Norton Internet Security 2009...although many reviews state that this one isn't the resource hog it's predecessors were. My previous system was at times unstable also...and I also had Norton running. Not sure if this is Norton or not, but I guess there is only one way to find out?
Anyway here are my specs... EVGA nForce 780i SLI FTW Mobo Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 Processor nVidia GeForce 9500GT graphics 4 GB RAM (going to upgrade to 8 now that I have 64 bit) 500GB Seagate HD Sooo, my plan was to do a clean install of Windows (rather than uninstall Norton) and try a different method of security. I currently have a Fios Modem and a Netgear Router. Thoughts on security/AV programs to run? |

I guess to add to this...do I really need an AV software with Windows 7 and behind a router?

My W7 install runs fine with the free version of AVG, I just upgraded to AVG 9 and it seems to be ok so far.
You will be fine with the Windows built in firewall and the routers firewall.

Nobody really needs Norton, period. There is plenty of freeware that does just as good or a better job than Norton. Don't let the ads and the celebratory reviews in the PC magazines sway you.

I swore off Norton in 2003 (I think.) I had just gotten my computer back from Gateway Country with a fresh install and installed Norton on it. I can't recall what it did really bad issues as I recall), but it was really screwed up and I never realized Norton was the problem until doing lots of other things to it. That did it for me.
While we are at it, I have sworn off Pinnacle too. I bought a video capture card and software after them being recommended to me here years ago. Although the specs acted like my computer would work, I could only get it to record around 6 minutes at a time. Years later (maybe around 2004) I got a newer version for the work computer and was never really able to use it because the audio and video had syncing problems. Come to find out that was pretty normal, so I have sworn them off for good. I spent some decent money on two different tries and if they can't get the basic stuff down and I was unable to use either one for anything I wanted to do, then they have lost me as a customer for life. I don't think it would matter if people said things were corrected or not. Now, if they refunded me for both (with interest) and gave me new free of charge replacements (since I wasted a lot of time and had a lot of aggravation) and I found they worked, I might get back on the bandwagon for future releases, but I wouldn't guarantee that.

Alright...well back up and running after a clean install. I decided to go with Avast Antivirus. Hopefully I have better luck now.
On another note...and maybe this isn't the best forum for it, but I was running acronis true image as well for back up solution. Do you think this contributed to any of my problems? |

If it's not the very latest version of True Image that's compatible with Win7, that could be an issue.
