Well, lets start here. Do these Sony Vaio's come need a 'bridge' and what is this 1394 net adaptor?

Also, I looked up some other modem that I might want to get and most of them say usb/ethernet so wouldnt that be the same as the one I already have? The modem I have now is requiring the usb cable it wont work without it, its also listed as a USB Cable Modem during setup. SOOOOO could I buy a different modem, one thats not a USB modem, if possible...

If it has an ethernet port and a USB port I would suspect that it can be either and the reason for the message is that it found the USB port first.
If it identifies as a USB and installs as a USB it probably is only going to work as a USB until the setup parameters are reset. Under the same circumstances I would be looking for a reset button and would try it as ehternet only to see if the suspicion of dual use was valid. This is speculation. I have no way to know if it could be. |

It's dual use. If you DO NOT connect the USB cable, it WILL work as an Ethernet modem.
Control Panel (Classic View) Network Connections Pull down the "View" menu and select "Details". Please take a screen shot and post it as an attachment or upload it to a photo sharing site and post a link to it. Please verify what version of Windows you are using? |

I have now got the modem hooked up to the computer WITHOUT the USB Cable and using the ethernet cable. Now how should I approach getting the modem and router to work hand in hand... because my modem only has one ethernet port and if I take it out of the computer the internet wont work and I cant get into my IP address...

I replied to your PM, and I'll paste my response below:
--------------------------------------------------- If it works that way now, very simple. Unplug the power from the cable modem. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer and connect it to the Internet/WAN port on the router. Connect another Ethernet cable from one of the numbered ports on the router to the Ethernet jack on your computer. Take a pen point or something that will fit in the reset button hole on the router and hold the reset button in. While continuing to hold the reset button in, plug the router's power cord in and keep holding the reset button in for 30 seconds. release the reset button, then connect the power cord back up to the modem and reboot your computer. You should have Internet access. If you want to configure the router (recommended) it will be 192.168.1.1. Leave the username blank, password is admin ------------------------------------------------------------------ The local area connection that needs to be used is the one associated with the Intel PRO/100VE. The USB cable modem and the bridge needs to go away. |

You don't need a wireless card to run it with a cable. Check your PM response.
And you are correct, according to the screenshot you don't have a wireless adapter unless the drivers aren't installed. Do you have any flagged devices in device manager? Let's keep everything in here, please - I'll see things just as quickly here as I will in PM's. Last edited by glc; 03-14-2011 at 08:54 PM. |

Then you are going to have to buy a wireless adapter.
For now, follow all my past instructions explicitly to stay connected with a cable through the router. |

I am connected with a cable through the router now. Is there a certain wireless adaptor I must get to comply with my Sony Vaio or Linksys router? I guess just get a Linksys USB wireless adaptor?

Okay - before I go any farther, please post another screen shot of your network connections the way they are now. I want to make sure there's nothing in there that's going to trip you up some more. Confirm that you do have Internet access, and browsing to 192.168.1.1 will bring up the router login page. Also post another ipconfig/all.

The bridge is still there. You still haven't properly uninstalled the USB modem. This may cause issues when you try to install a wireless card.
Anyway: Newegg.com - Linksys WUSB54GC-LA IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter Up to 54Mbps Wireless Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, WPA You should be able to right click on the Network Bridge and delete it. Last edited by glc; 03-14-2011 at 10:56 PM. |

I was editing while you were posting - just delete the bridge. This SHOULD release the Local Area Connection and the 1394 from the bridge and put them where they belong. Reboot the computer and you should have access. Make a system restore point before you delete the bridge, and if you screw it up just do a restore and we'll look at another way to do it.

I just removed connections from the bridge then deleted the bridge itself. Rebooted and I have internet access
![]() Now I just need to be ready to install a wireless card. Hey how could I know for sure that this computer didnt come with a built in wireless card? Where would it be housed... |

Could you please post just one more screen shot of the network connections and another ipconfig/all?
Look in device manager - exactly what is listed under network adapters? Is there a button somewhere on the laptop that looks like it can turn a wireless adapter on and off? What about a bios setting? If there's no wireless adapter in device manager, you either don't have one or it's turned off. If it didn't have the drivers installed, it would still show up flagged, either in network adapters or other devices. If it had one, it would be under a cover somewhere. |

This is a PC not a laptop...
As you will see the bridge is GONE! Took a screenshot of my Device Manager too so you can see it... You are good to go.
If this is not a laptop, it did not come with a wireless adapter. Why do you WANT wireless if it's not a laptop? |

Okay - for a desktop computer, I've had excellent luck with this inexpensive card:
Newegg.com - Rosewill RNX-G300EX IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Wireless Card Up to 54Mbps Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, 802.1x, WPA, WPA2, AES, TKIP with 100cm cable external 2 dBi Antenna When you install it, I recommend you choose to let Windows configure it rather than the Ralink utility. |

Small point glc, the last desktop (Dell) I bought came with both gigabit LAN on motherboard and a PCI wireless adapter. The wireless comes in handy once-in-awhile.

I've never seen a Sony Vaio desktop that came with XP have a factory wireless adapter.
