IP Address/Router Help
I have a Sony Vaio PC and I just moved into my own apartment and I took a Linksys WRT54GS V6.0 with me. The router hasnt been used in like a year so I reset it when I hooked it up to the computer.
Keep in mind, it is no longer under warranty and Linksys Live Chat refused to help me! My modem and Router are both connected, the lights on the router are lit up and I can use the modem to get online. BUT every time I try to enter 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in either Internet Explorer or Firefox, they wont load. Just says connection timed out and I can still get to other pages so its not the internet connection itself... I have made sure the computers IP is 192.168.0.1 but the routers default IP is 192.168.1. and neither work... PLEASE HELP Ive tried so many things... |

You can try setting your compter to get the IP address automatically. If it works that will give you some guidance to which address is correct for the router.
As an alternate you could set it manually and then ping what you suspect is the router's address. Once you show a return from ping you have the address you need to use for access. |

You shouldn't change the computer's ip address, set it to obtain ip address automatically. According to the Linksys website the default address to access the router's setup page is 192.168.1.1 but that could have been changed. Read these instructions from the Linksys website that explain how to determine the router's ip address or how to reset it back to factory defaults. Checking the Linksys Router's IP Address

As said, set the PC to obtain an IP automatically.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN port and connect the PC to one of the numbered ports. Do not connect the PC directly to the modem. Do a hard reset on the router. You do that by disconnecting the power cord, hold the reset button in with something like a pen point, plug the power cord back in while still holding the reset button in, and continue holding for 30 seconds. Then it WILL be 192.168.1.1, leave the username blank, password will be admin. |

You have any other computers that you can try to get to the router?
Did you follow the link to determine the router's ip address? How exactly are you typing in the address? I'm assuming you are now set for dhcp on the computer? |

No other computer to use as of right now. Im not sure what dhcp means. I renewed it it said my local area connection 2 had an default gateway of 71.68.32.1 and the default gateway of my network bridge was blank for some reason. I tried that one and 192.168.1.1 and still nothing.

I'm also wondering what the Network Bridge adapter is used for? Was this part of some network before? Last edited by legend_018; 03-13-2011 at 03:16 PM. |

I have no clue. I bought the computer from a friend about a week ago. It works fine but yeah the newtork bridge thing confuses me. Can I remove it and start fresh? Or do I need it? Please help.

In the description of the network bridge, in the cmd showed earlier, says "MAC mini bridge" so maybe it was for a MAC/Apple computer I have no clue lol

well might want to wait for someone else to reply, but I'm pretty sure you don't need this network bridge. As far as the other adapater - 192.168.1.100 is the beginning of the default dynamic IP address range for Linksys so I don't know where 71.68.42.248 is coming from. Although it does say it's set to dhcp for that one.

Well if the computer is set to dhcp than the ip should be 192.168.1.x
not 71.68.42.248 Unless the routers DHCP range was changed. but, I'm guessing if you did a hard reset - it should be using the default range. |

You CANNOT use a USB modem with a router! If the modem has an Ethernet jack, UNINSTALL the modem, GET RID of the USB cable, connect the modem to the router with Ethernet, and connect the computer to the router with Ethernet.

If I take out the usb cable from my modem it wont let me access the internet. Even though I already have an ethernet cable going from the modem to the router AND an ehternet cable going from the router to the computer...

You CANNOT use BOTH cables!!!!!!!! UNINSTALL the USB modem in Windows. REMOVE the USB cable. Unplug the modem's and router's power cords for 30 minutes. Then plug them back in and reboot the computer.

Thinking about it a bit more, it sounds like you enabled internet connection sharing - you need to uninstall the bridge and then go into the TCP/IP properties of the Ethernet adapter and set it to obtain an IP address automatically. The sharing that got set up with the bridge set it to 192.168.0.1 which will NOT work. Do this first.

Go into network connections, right click on the connection. Select Properties, on the General tab double click on TCP/IP. The bridge MUST be deleted.
Why did you set this thing up using USB in the first place? You only do that when you have a single computer that does NOT have an Ethernet adapter. |

I think based on the ipconfig results you sent earlier that you should be looking at Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2

Perhaps. However, when you uninstall the bridge it may be different.
