PSA for Verizon FiOS customers

If you have Verizon FiOS and a battery backup for your FiOS fiber line, make sure there is a surge protector on it! Mine was not surge protected, and the installer did not say it needed to be, but a surge went into the system through it, then went through the router and fried my computer and printer, both of which were plugged in via Ethernet. Luckily, my hard drives are fine, but if I don't get Verizon to pay for new equipment, I'm out $1000 for a new computer and a replacement for my 3-month-old printer.

So make sure the battery backup is surge-protected!
