Smile best wifi adapter for weak signal

issue: wifi signal is very weak in this location

question: suggestions for signal enahncing wireless adapters
-----------------------------------------------

discussion:

live in an aprtment complex supplying wifi. signal is very weak at my location (95 dbm).

I see several "high sensitivity" wifi adapters advertised on ebay which claim "9-20 db gain"(sic)

has anyone had good results with these(ie do they really boost signal when campared to "standard" wifi wireless cards?) If so-which brands/models?

"Alpha" markets such an adapter--comes with two antennae: a stubby whip and a micro radar dish look alike--im skeptical whether this will really boost the signal!!--costs about $35.

I used this recommended by glc. My son in a 2-story house and router downstairs on other side of house. He said it works great whereas his notebook didn't. Am sure Newegg has it. My local Fry's has it $10 cheaper.

Micro Center - Zonet High Gain Wireless N PCI Adapter ZEW1690

Signal boost can be done in two ways, by increasing the power or by focusing the energy. The maximum energy is limited to one watt so it is more effective to focus the energy if you want greater range or the greater ability to minimize attenuation through obstacles, like walls.

High gain antennas do work by directing and receiving the energy into one direction. (shaping the lobe) The more focused and directional is the lobe, the higher the dB rating, Larger parabolic dishes are going to be some of the higher dB antennas.

The legal dB rating is limited by more complex factors including your max transmitting power.

If you don't need it to be mobile you could give one of these a try.
How to use a Cantenna
Or if your handy you can even build your own.
