secure wi-fi for adult family home business PC
I am starting up an adult family home and will have a business PC with the clients medical info on that PC. How do I keep that PC secure while allowing the clients access to the network via wi-fi for their own personal use. The business PC can be a wired connection from the router if necessary. I have not purchased the router yet - if you have suggestions on a good brand to get. Would like a newer router that uses the "n" standard. ( I have on old router now that just does b & g ) Thanks, Katie

The first thing that comes to mind is a separate phone line for the business PC (hard wired to it's own router so it uses a hardware firewall) and the wireless router on the other phone line that the residents use.
That way any transfer between the two would have to be by USB key (and there shouldn't be any!).

All you need is a wireless router that offers the "guest access" feature. This places all guest wireless connections on a completely different IP subnet than the main connections. Although it's expensive, I recommend the Linksys E4200. I would also recommend you connect the business PC with a cable.

Thanks for your answers. Getting the Linksys E4200 router sounds like a good solution. Katie

I would advise you to get the original E4200, not the new V2. The V2 uses a new chipset and 3rd party firmware is not compatible with it.

First I would check on what HIPPA requires for transmitting patient information over the internet.
