Router firmware mods

Hi there,
I got a good deal on a D-link DIR-601v.A1 router. I'd like to change out the firmware with something else that is more customizable. My older router would keep crashing, I am guessing due to heavy connection traffic.

After a web search, I found these options, (listed below). Because of the model of the router, I think that I am limited to DD-WRT or OpenWRT. I am leaning toward OpenWRT because it seems they have a lot of support options.

Is anyone using this kind of firmware? Pros and cons. Different options?
Thanks for any replies.

DD-WRT
FreeWRT
HyperWRT Thibor
OpenWRT
Tarifa
X-Wrt

I use DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT54GL router. I'm happy with it.

DD-WRT on my WRT54GS, solid / stable firmware. Very user configurable.

How is the web filter? I have kids and like to have the ability to blocked the websites that the kids have to business to view.

Thank you,

For web filtering I use Open DNS, which is free and can be setup within the router by using their DNS IP address.
