I tried setting up an extra router as a repeater but it's not working.
EDIT:
Well I guess I have a new question, I have my modem/router downstairs and the net works fine in down portion of house. Upstairs I connected another router (which is also a modem) and I have two connections that I can connect to, one is with default username/password of modem. The other is open connection. The router upstairs has the same net as the one downstairs it seems, they are both equally spread around the house. When I had my modem upstairs, I got net there in my room and so on, now that I have just a router upstairs, it works in the same way as downstairs, there's not much coverage upstairs. Shouldn't it, as a router, give me net upstairs in rooms as well? I want it to work as a repeater. When the modem was upstairs I couldn't get net where I am now, and now that I'm connected to the upstairs router, I have net down here too. How can I merge them into one connection and have the upstairs router work across the whole floor like it did when I had the modem upstairs. Instead of doing the same thing the downstairs one is doing. Last edited by 12084182; 12-30-2011 at 05:59 AM. |

This is a hard wired network, correct?
Use a hub or switcher upstairs instead of a second router. Switchers selectively route packets to their proper destinations. Hubs unselectively route all the packets to all the ports. Since you are using it for a home network, which means you do not have a whole lot of traffic, either will work. I am using a Linksys switcher in a bedroom and a Dynex hub in the garage. Both work fine for me. glc will know which are the most reliable brands. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...on=hub&x=0&y=0

How do you connect the 2 routers together?
I've set up multiple wireless routers via cable with different lan addresses and different ip pools to give separate ranges depending on the which connects best. Only one is the gateway. |

You only want one modem/router in your system. Anything else should only be switches and wireless access points.

Used the second and third as switchs and wireless. No routing.

How did I connect the two routers? Via Ethernet cable.
I get that I need everything else as a switcher/wireless access point but I don't know how to do that. I tried changing settings in the routers address, but it doesn't seem to be working. When I went to the store (before posting this) I asked for options and considered a switcher but I told the guy I have a router lying around and he said it'll work just fine, and be cheaper, if I just connected with a cable. But I don't know how to make one router know it has to just be a switcher/access point instead of routing. |

To "neuter" a router to make it just a switch and WAP:
Log into the MAIN router and look at its internal IP address and DHCP range. I will use a Linksys as an example - its IP is 192.168.1.1, and its DHCP range is 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149. Connect a computer to the REMOTE router and log into it. Do the following in this order: 1. Turn OFF its internal DHCP server. 2. Change its internal IP to one that is IN the main router's subnet but OUTSIDE its DHCP range - using the example above, I'd recommend 192.168.1.254. 3. The cable from the main router should be plugged into one of its LAN ports, NOT the Internet/WAN port. |

IIRC I left DHCP enabled and changed the address pool assigned so that looking at the IP address would flag which router was in use:
floor 1 had address pool of 10 to 19, floor 2 was 20 to 29, floor 3 was 30 to 39. This was a couple of years ago and I haven't looked at it since so the numbers might have been different. It was cheaper to do things this way than recable a building. |

I can't log into the main router, it wont let me access the IP. Even if I disconnect the other router. Both are linksys. I can log into the other router though, using that IP (I need to connect to it's network first though). I even tried other IP combinations in case it changed as there's two routers. It is connected like that. I didn't connect to internet port. |

I would just buy a switcher for 12 bucks rather than pulling my hair out over this.

You may have a problem with IP assignments out of it. How about doing a reset (switch on back) then set the computer for automatic IP then do a ipconfig /renew and ipconfig to find out what it is handing out default. Then see if you can ping it. If so, browse to it and configure it. This with the second router disconnected. Go through the same things with the second (first disconnected) making sure that the address of the router and the addresses it is handing out are not in conflict. While in them you may want to config the wireless parts, too. |

When I went to a local shop the guy offered me something 'cheap' for around 80 bucks (well more cause we use Euros here) so that put me off. I wanted a fast solution. Newegg doesn't ship to Europe which is a shame. I can look at eBay but again, it's gonna take a while for shipping. Quote:

Okay, so I tried to access settings of original router (Thomson SpeedTouch 585V7) and I had to put username and password, I searched online for defaults, one site said Admin - blank another said password is the serial number, I've tried every combo possible
from variations of admin/administrator (caps/no caps) to blanks to every number possible on the router itself, nothing was working. Now I tried to change password to see if that makes a difference as the username isn't required for that and when I clicked save changes, now I can't access the routers IP at all!!! What is happening? EDIT: Try to access IP and it's asking me to log in, didn't have that problem before. I could access but needed to log in to edit settings. Does it have anything to do with my password change? Does that mean it's my password but some username I haven't figured out? Last edited by 12084182; 01-06-2012 at 05:09 AM. |

Sounds like you changed the login and password at the same time. Haven't touched that router so not aware of how to take it back to "factory" but there should be a reset switch that will do it. And then the guessing game on the default settings.
Some info off the web: https://www.drivehq.com/file/df.aspx...h%20585v7.html |

I did reset the router before while I was able to access it's IP address, it reset completely, I had to log in to the ISPs website to access internet, but then I messed with password and that happened. I'll reset it from the router itself but I'll be having the same log in problems as I don't know what the username or password is. And I've been to that link but it's not working. Says the password should be the s/n if it was purchased after 2010, but I don't think it was otherwise it would be working. |

I've tried those, they all require password or items that came with the router that I don't have (CD and such) None of the password suggestions work.
Thanks anyway! I'll just buy a repeater when I get a chance and connect that instead. |
