avira versus spywareblaster
been a long time since i visited here, wow the place has changed! anyway i recieved a pop up from avira to update to new version cause mine is out of date, ok so i do the update only to find out thier server is EXTREMELY slow for free version. well i waited for the download almost 7 minutes (painstakingly slow considerin i'm on cable). then i started the install & got a warning from avira for incompatable software that has to be un-installed in order to run avira. wow it's for spywareblaster, what the hell? i've been using spywareblaster, avira, malwarebites, superantispyware for years. now all a sudden they incompatable, what gives?

Just get Microsoft Security Essentials or less preferably, get rid of the problem child rather than everything else that is compatible.

thanks but i'm more interested in understanding why avira has decided to do that and has anyone else come across this problem. i will most likely just keep the older version of avira cause it seems to be still working. or is there a chance that the avira pop-up from the start bar was some sort of trojon/maleware thing. i canceled the install cause i didn't want to uninstall anything.

An older version of an anti-malware package will not do you any good with there being new malware all the time.

i appreciate your response david, but can you please be more on point. i told of an issue with avira antvir free and all you say is "get MSE and get rid of problem child". sry but thats not appropiate. i've been using avira for couple years and i'm happy with it. also my 'older' version of avira still gets new deffinition updates so again please stay on point here. i'm trying to find out what this issue is and if anyone else has come across it and what thier results were. thanks again to all.

I don't have an exact answer regarding Avira. I was just suggesting what I think is the best thing to do regarding the best freeware anti-malware software. Therefore your question about Avira becomes irrelevant since it is less than the best solution anyway.
Given both choices are free, you don't want to use the less than best, do you? Last edited by David M; 04-14-2012 at 11:54 AM. |

I chunked Avira awhile back off another PC that had run good. Who knows why some software don't like each other like they once did. Even people are like that. It's pretty much unanimous around here to use MSE. And I among others also use this (free version):
If you absolutely must know the issue, try their support forums: http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php

If you must stay with Avira, uninstall Spyware Blaster, then reinstall it after updating Avira.
Admin note - if you don't like a response, don't make an issue over it, just move on. Thanks. |

thank you all, but i did not make an issue out of anything. i posted a specific problem and i got a generic response. i thought you all were supposed to work through an issue & not just recommend "forget about your software just go with something else its easier" guess this site ain't what it used to be... thanks again no disrespect intended to anyone. peace to all. questions still un-answered.

Many folks here have abandoned Avira because of the problems it has caused as of late. Compatibility issues, the required email registration, and the nag screens being the most common complaints. Many folks have taken up MSE because it's free, easy to use, problem-free, and offers good anti-virus protection. In effect, folks were trying to solve your issue by providing the easiest proven and trouble-free solution--they just didn't fully spell out *why* it was the most appropriate solution. I hope that addresses your concerns.

2 minutes of research on this end was simple. The time you spent tossing darts could have been spent doing what I did for you. You're welcome.

thank you sarge and glc, actually all of you for commenting. perhaps i wasn't clear enuff either cause i was just curious of the issue with the new version of avira which sarge answered (guess they prefer us to use pay version but that wont work with me, haha). my version is solid until end of 2012 when i 'assume' they will stop support on older version. so got plenty time to get something new, as always i will use what you all recommend cause seems you all know whats best cause i sure don't. i trust you all... always have. thanks again. btw dart throwin can be productive, hahaha.

Note that Microsoft has no axe to grind - they have no "pay for" security software so they don't need to try to push you out of the free version.
