repeater bridge or AP to extend wifi

I have a netgear WNDR3700 as my primary home router towards the front of my house. I installed DD-WRT on an old Linksys WRT54G v1.1 and want to use it to extend the wifi range in my house towards the back. My whole house has ethernet for the desktops, but I want better coverage for my laptops or phones towards the back corner of my property. I don't want to use access points since that would involve having to choose an AP which I would have to explain to my wife and kids to do. I just want the Linksys to be placed midway towards the back and boost the signal, but so that whatever mobile device automatically uses it if the signal from the netgear gets weak. Is a repeater bridge what I need?
