New rules regarding "cookies"

BBC News - Cookie law: websites must seek consent from this weekend

Quote:
The guidelines, set by the EU, mean visitors must be told what cookies are being placed on their machine.

Typically, this will mean a pop-up window seeking consent.
That's all very well, but what if you use a "pop up" blocker?

Quote:
The BBC, which brought its site in line with the guidelines on Thursday, allows users to opt out of cookies the first time they visit the website.
Time to clean out the cookie jar..

Just in general to everyone....
The more difficult it is for advertisers to reach their audience, the fewer free websites that there will be.

This is the downside to blocking marketing, tracking, cookies and pop-ups that is rarely mentioned.

I know I am not interested in paying for every website that I visit so am willing to put up with a degree of this stuff in order to keep websites free.

If you don't want any of it then you had better be willing to pay for it eventually. People don't work for free.

It's kind of a ridiculous law. I heard about it months ago.

Basically, it was written by people who have no clue on how the internet or websites work. Or rather, believe enough myths and misconceptions that they think they know how things work.

Technically speaking, the requirements in this law are extremely difficult to comply with.
