The word from Oracle: "Oracle is aware of a flaw in Java software integrated with web browsers. The flaw is limited to JDK7. It does not exist in other releases of Java, and does not affect Java applications directly installed and running on servers, desktops, laptops, and other devices. A fix will be available shortly"

Who to believe?...the government or Oracle? I don't know. My guess is that it will end up being one of those things that is completely overblown

It usually is. The media tends to overreact to computer viruses and security issues. I have yet to see any coverage on the annoying "antivirus 2012" malware that I see on a somewhat regular basis. That is by far more common than obscure security flaws that are usually addressed soon after the tech communities catch wind of it.

The last time I encountered an actual wide-spread security issue was in 2001 when the NIMDA virus was making its rounds. That was before a majority of business networks had any antivirus software in place--and some didn't even have a network firewall.

Everything after that has primarily occurred more on an individual basis.

Completely over done. I told my customers to relax and disable it for piece of mind. Funny thing is, 90% of them are on V6 or older.... and don't listen to me anyway about keeping things up to date. Out of the 34 calls, 3 had it up to date, 4 were Linux users, and the rest... well lets just say nothing. I sent out a mass email in hopes to curb the calls.

I read a fix will be released Tuesday, 15 Jan.

Two of my machines installed a Java update this morning, hopefully that is the fix.

I haven't had Java installed at all for around 18 months now. I can't say I've noticed the lack of it.

Here we go again!!
Another machine with a Java exploit, must be the fifth or sixth machine this week and they are all coming up with different exploits.
I might start keeping a list of the different infections.

Add to that, it's my understanding that JAVA is becoming obsolete and many people don't even need it on their computers anymore. Honestly, I wish it would die a quick death and allow us to stop with all the endless updates.

I can reluctantly understand MS Windows requiring constant updates, but not all these constant JAVA and ADOBE updates, which are so annoying.

Question is, if I begin a campaign of removing JAVA from all my customer's computers, what are the most common applications or websites that won't work anymore?

I despise Adobe software and only have Flash Player installed. I was fed up of Acrocr*p Reader constantly phoning the mothership and telling tales on me, so now every machine I work on I install Foxit reader. I would love for somebody to explain to me why Acrocr*p Reader takes up approximately 140mb on your harddrive and Foxit Reader (that does the exact same job) takes up approximately 15mb.
