Router Recommendation?
What is the current PCMech recommended wireless router? I'm currently running a WRT54G v5.0 from back in 2004-05 and it's starting to show its age. A family member got a new Blu-ray player for Christmas and has signed up for Netflix. Whenever there's a movie streaming the latencies get pretty high and it's affecting my online gaming. My ping from the router occasionally gets as high as 45ms, I've noticed this on multiple computers so I don't think it's my adapter.
The updated WRT54GL seems to be a pretty highly rated router with the DD-WRT firmware. Is this a good direction to go or should I be looking at something different? My DSL speed is usually in the 5Mbps range and probably won't be going up soon, so I don't need anything extremely fast. Thanks in advance, everyone. |

Now a days you want a Gigabit router... Personally I'd look at an Asus router...
They are very nice and even the cheapo one I have is DD-WRT compatible but is not a gigabit... Amazon.com: ASUS RT-N13U Wireless-N Router, Access Point, and Repeater: Electronics That is the one I have.... only reason is I won it in a contest and for what it is...it is very nice... I use it as an Access Point. If I were to buy another I'd more than likely get this one... http://www.amazon.com/RT-N16-Wireles...pd_sim_sbs_e_5

That's a great suggestion Max. My D-Link gaming router is getting more and more flaky requiring me to have to power cycle it more frequently. Thanks for that.

These days, I'd get a "N" router, and I concur with the Asus recommendation.
Newegg.com - ASUS RT-N10+ IEEE Wireless Router EZ N 802.11b/g/n Support up to 4 SSID in Business (Open source DDWRT support) Newegg.com - ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server Newegg.com - ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router, DD-WRT Open Source support, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab |
