Need router recommendation
 

Hi, My venerable Linksys WRT54GC has finally bit the dust. About a year ago knowing the Linksys was aging I bought a Netgear WGR614 v9 that was on sale at Newegg as a backup. So I made the swap, what a disappointment, hardwired it is getting 10 to 15 Mbps less than my old Linksys. A couple of years ago I was looking to replace the old Linksys and asked for a recommendation here, and glc said I should use the Linksys till it quit as the new routers weren't as good. Well now I'm looking for a faster one than this Netgear, is there anything out there which performs well without spending a fortune. TIA

Thanks glc, I think I'll go with the top one, it's on sale at Newegg for $27 and I don't think I could take advantage of the Gigabyte speeds of the other ones, my internet speed is 30 to 40 Mbps. It looks like it's a good idea to update it to the dd-wrt firmware so I'll also do that.

Hi, Got the Asus RT-N10+ had it setup in less than 10 minutes with the dd-WRT firmware which I had downloaded and the instructions before the router came and was set to go. The hard wired connections are even a little faster than my old Linksys 35 to 45 Mbps, and much faster than that Netgear I was using. Very good recommendation glc. I read on an other post that there was a setting to speed up the wireless does anyone know what that would be? Have not found out anything about that. Did read that getting a USB N adapter would help, but I thought N only increased distance not speed. I'm getting excellent range anywhere in my apt with my laptop. But the wireless speed is only between 5 and 7 Mbps? The wireless adapter built into my HP laptop is only a G. Is this where I'm stuck or is there a setting to increase it? It is not a big deal as my Roku and Blu-Ray are hard wired through a switch, and I mainly use my desktop but having a little more speed for my laptop would be desirable. Thanks

A "N" adapter should help with speed. Max theoretical "G" speed is 54 mbps, max basic "N" speed is 150 mbps.

What are you running for Tx Power? (Status - Wireless)

Thanks for the link glc, the only thing I see is TX power 71 mW, where exactly is the TX power status setting?

That's the default. You can change it in Wireless - Advanced Settings. 100 mw should be safe.
