RCMP virus/malware
 

Trying to help out a buddy who has a virus problem. His asus notebook has a RCMP virus/malware. The computer will boot up to the desk top and then go to a white screen. Not able to do anything from this point on. Cannot boot in safe mode. When this is attempted it will boot up and then shut down and try to boot in normal fashion. Have tried to boot to "last know good etc " This also will not work.

Is there a way to do system restore without booting up?

Or will I have to do reinstall of windows?

You can make a couple different cd's and see if you can clean the pc.

TEEB. We are seeing more and more of this and to be honest one of the best ways of dealing with it, is to slave the harddrive to another PC running upto date antivirus and malware scanners.
I am guessing that this virus is a variant of the FBI/UK Police warning that you have been illegally downloading?
Malwarebytes and Emsisoft are very good at dealing with this problem. Can you let me know if you are going to slave the harddrive to another machine as I will have a question for you.

Sorry i didn't see this reply until now. I didn't slave the HDD. What I did was hit F8 on boot up and then selected "repair computer". I then did a system restore. This enabled everything again and I ran Malwarebytes and several on line antivirus scanners. Interestingly he came back with the same virus a few weeks later. His grand kids got from playing some sort of on line games. Don't know what ones.

Yes it was a variant of the FBI/UK virus. Apparently it only infects laptops.
