wifi antennae?
I use an older 110L Dell laptop in my shop with an internal wifi device for internet access down there. It's about 100ft. from the wireless router up here at the house.
I get very good to excellent signal quality, but low signal strength. Most of the time it works well enough for the limited time I'm online...but sometimes it keeps losing connection. Is there anything I can do to boost the reception, like an antennae of some sorts? The laptop is is direct sight of the router through windows in both the house and shop... thanks |

I don't think 100ft. of cable is too expensive. I might be cheaper than you think.
 Newegg.com - Accessories, Cables, Computer Cables, Network Cables, Network Ethernet Cables, 100 ft.. Alternatively, you could just get a box of 500ft and get a crimping tool and some ends and make it as long as you need.

What they are getting at is hardwiring the connection is faster, more reliable, less expensive if you don't already have a wireless connection and more secure. It's your ideal choice.

thanks guys...
100ft. of cable at the Staples in town is almost $75, the price at Newegg is very affordable. I was just looking for a solution to using the wireless router that Fairpoint gave me for free. I definitely will install a cable when the snow is gone... |

I will never understand how local places like Staples, Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc can charge so much for cables. A 6' HDMI cable from any of those places costs anywhere from $20-40 where I'm at. The same goes for RG6-QS cable and Cat5e/Cat6 cables as well - if I wanted anything longer than 25', the prices were through the roof. I would just as well buy it from eBay/Newegg/Monoprice and pay the possible $4 in shipping along with around $10 for the cable.

A wireless boost solution is going to cost you more than a cable.
Can you take a more exact measurement of exactly how long the cable needs to be? Instead of burying it, can you string the cable up high? |
