three units to the same hardwire?
can I do this?
I have: One hard wire already ran to my son's room. It is connected to the router. My son has a PS3, Xbox 360, and his PC. I would like to set up a switch or (I don't have the vocabulary for it) something to allow him to connect all three units that will eliminate his having to unplug the cord and move it to the unit he wants to get online with. I think this is done with a hub, but I'm at a loss to the know how. He doesn't need all three at once to connect, just what ever unit he wishes to use. |
Something like this will do you fine although you might want to get the gigabit version if your internet connection speed can handle it.
NETGEAR 5 Port 10/100 High Performance Desktop Switch (FS605) - Newegg.com |
Hey thanks. i saw it was plug and play.:) I've not done any networking. Just made the cables this week. Bought some 5e off Craigslist. Didn't know it was gonna be that easy.;)
We're paying for 100mbs, so I would assume it will be fine. |

Two devices; so I would assume it's a seperate modem and router. We're using Bright House cable for our internet service.

When you ran the cable to your sons room, did you terminate it in a wall socket or crimp an RJ45 lan plug on the end?
|
Direct line with an RJ45 connector on both ends. I didn't run it thru the walls. Just along the base boards and over the doors.
I got to buy a new toy too! Oh wait, yeh tool..;) I love it when the wife wants something now.. I just tell her, I cant do it without the right tool. |
Add a few premade patch cables of the right length to your order for the switch and your ready to go.

Shoot I already got plenty of multiple length patch cables. Almost threw them out...My PC was always hard wired.:D
I got 1000 feet for 40 bucks, used maybe 300 of it.:p |
