PC-Cillin
Anyone had any problems with PC-Cillin software. recently built a PC for a friend, PC-Cillin came with the M/B disc. Seems he can send e-mails but not receive them. he called the ISP helpline and was informed that it was a known problem with PC-Cillin. i assume it is scanning the incoming e-mails but why won't it allow e-mails to be sent? i use Norton anti-virus myself so am not familiar with PC-Cillin.

i did the same for a friend, and the first thing i did was go to the
PC-Cillin site and download all the updates for it. even though the motherboard was new, there were many updates. haven't had any problems. it may be worth it to check the email account properties and make sure all the server, etc. info is correct. if it's a known issue, hopefully they'll have a fix. in the short term, will disabling the email scan help? i'll be going with a more "established" name myself, like macafee or norton. |

re: poops
I'd stay away from McAfee products. Norton's works "okay". Use the search tool (in the yellow band above) and type in "McAfee"...pick a thread and you will see just how troublesome their software can be.

I installed NAV 2002 on In-Laws XP OS and they get along quite well together.
Good Luck,

"Established", hmmmm, as what?.....well anyway, if you have your e-mail set to start when the system does it will sometimes have it's settings screwed up by PCCillin starting at the same time. You either need to start the e-mail after boot up or have it start up delayed.

Im glad i ran across this thread. I installed pc-cillin yesterday, did all the updates and everything. It seemed to run ok,but there was a VERY annoying pop-up every 20 seconds or so.I looked everywhere on how to turn this off,and tried everything i could find, but this thing kept on popppin up.Is it supposed to do that?It was driving me crazy,so i unistalled it today. If i was overlooking something please let me know.Looked like a pretty good program.Thanks.

The default setting is for a pop-up to appear on every new website and anytime the mail sends and receives. You can turn off the pop-ups by clicking on "options" > "mail scan" > and then unchecking "splash" for the mail and then clicking on "webtrap" > "web security" > and unchecking "show welcome screen..." other than the annoying default pop-up settings, I like this program.

Thanks All,
I have also received the following email from customer support on how to turn off the pop-ups.I think i will give it another try. Here is the directions I got. Splash Screen indicates that your PC-Cillin works well and it is part of the program. But if you wish to disable it, please follow the procedure below. If the banner that you see is the one that appears during start-up, kindly follow these instructions instead to disable it. 1. Run your Trend Pc-cillin 2000 program. 2. In the main window, refer to the menu above. Click on OPTIONS then STARTUP SCAN. It is disable if it has no check mark before it. 3. Restart your computer. If the banner that you see is the one used by the POP3 scan, kindly follow these instructions instead to disable it. 1. In the main window of PC-cillin, click on the Options menu and then click Mail Scan 2.In the panel marked Real Time scan for POP3, uncheck the box marked Splash 3. Click on the Apply button. If the banner that you see is the one displaying trial version message, kindly follow these instructions instead to disable it. 1. Launch your Windows Explorer. To do this, right-click the START button in your task bar and choose EXPLORE. The Windows Explorer window will appear. 2. In the ADDRESS bar, type c:\Program Files\Trend Pc-cillin 2000. [ if you are using a hard drive other than c:\ kindly replace it] Example: if your hard drive or local disk where pc-cillin is installed is your d:\ drive, the address bar should have this entry d:\Program Files\Trend Pc-cillin 2000 3. Press ENTER key on your keyboard. The folder for Pc-cillin will load in your window. 4. Look for TrialMsg.exe. Highlight it then press DELETE key on your keyboard. If the the banner that you are seeing is the real time splash screen of PC-cillin, you may wish to disable it by following the indicated procedure. 1. Run Trend Pc-cillin 2000 program. To do this, double-click the Pc-cillin icon (blue & white capsule with a lightning bolt over it) in your taskbar. Click on MAIN. Or in your taskbar, click on START, point to PROGRAMS then TREND PC-CILLIN 2000. Click on TREND PC-CILLIN 2000. 2. In the main window of PC-cillin, click on the Web Trap tab. It is located at the left column of your Pc-cillin window. 3. Double-click on the Web Security icon. 4. Uncheck the box for 'Show Web Trap's Welcome screen each time you start your browser'. 5. Click the APPLY button. Another Possible Method of disabling the real time splash banner: (for windows 98 users) 1. Run Trend Pc-cillin 2000 program. 2. In the main window, refer to the menu above. Click OPTIONS then ACTIVE DESKTOP 3. Remove the check beside the 'Add Trend Virus Center to Active Channel Bar'. Click to select or deselect it. 4. Press APPLY button |

I've used pcCillin for 3 years now and have liked it.
Their support is excellent and their program has improved steadily. Of all anti-virus programs it ranks in the top 3. There updates are frequent and their house call is rather useful for those without anti-virus protection or for those who just want to play it safe. PcCillin 2000 is the one that works in XP,it was the first one certified by Microsoft for Win2000. |

I like PC-cillin also. I've used it since Dr. Solomon kind of "went away." I tried Norton and Mcafee and some other lesser knowns. I like PC-cillin the best. For me it's the least intrusive (sans pop-ups) and most important, doesn't miss anything or lockup my system.
We use Norton at work (yes, it's updated all the time). We seem to have so many icky things floating all over that place. I use housecalls once a week to get rid of the stuff Norton misses on my PC. That in itself made me like PC-cillin even more. I have a friend that won't use anything but Norton. You use what seems best for you! |

Norton is the only AV program to use, the others have caused problems or the update sites are slow. Norton keeps updates in a timely manner and also updates not just the AV defs but also the program itself
