My brother-in-law's computer was obviously infected with a virus, he had the one where you have to chase down your desktop icons. So someone installed NAV2001 for him, as well as IE6. NAV found 3 viruses, magistr, and 2 named js.peter (or something like that). NAV found 14 infected files, of which it fixed 9, and quarantined 5. The quarantined files were all things like "reg.reg" and several other ".reg" files, and one windows file, "condo.exe".
Anyway, my sister-in-law sent me an email last night, saying that they can go online, but that's about all. Can't open .doc's, can't open Microsoft Works. Any clues? |

Associations are all messed up.
Windows doesn't know how to open the apps. Get TweakUI on the machine, and use the repair for associations. |

Ok, I can understand that for the files, but what about MS Works? Shouldn't that be a simple .exe? Or maybe she's trying to use a shortcut that got screwed to open it?

Ok, called the BIL this morning, this is what was really going on: somehow the virus must have corrupted one of the .dll's for his printer. Every time he opened any program, other than IE, his computer would crash with a message about hpxxxxx.dll has caused a GPF. Since his printer is the only HP thing he has installed, I recognized that it must be the printer software causing all the problems, so we reinstalled the printer software and everything is fine now.
Silly me, I shoulda know that "I can't open a Word doc." meant that the computer was crashing every 5 seconds... |
