I am trully stuck on this one, so any help is appreciated.
Here is the setup: Linksys Cable/DSL Router feeding off a cable modem. Two PCs connected to the router. PC1 - 1Ghz Athlon T-bird with WinXP PC2 - 350mhz Athlon with Win98SE Everything was working fine for a a few months including internet connection sharing up untill 3 weeks ago. PC2 is used just for internet surfing and nothing more. One day it would start to loose internet connection after being on anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. I can just sit there, no active inter use is needed to loose the connection. Just prior to it loosing the connection, I would notice that all the web content would load up a lot slower then at regular speed, almost getting to a crawl and after a minute or so it would finaly cut out completely. Now to fix it I would have to restart the machine and the internet would come back up but again it would only stay up anywhere from 5-20 minutes. The only way to get it back again would be to reboot, loging out and loging back it does nothing ![]() Now when it does loose the internet, the network is still working however. I can ping the other computer on the network (PC1) and I can access the router and login to the admin panel of the Linksys router. So this means the internal network is still operational. How ever I can not ping any of the internet sites. It returns with a message saying "unknown host somewebsite.com" To make matters more interesting, PC1 at the same time is doing just fine, it can be on all day and not loose the internet connection ![]() So far I have replaced the netcard in PC2 with a brand new card and the problems still persisted. So I decided to wipe the HDD and re-isntall Win98SE. I just finished it today and the same problem is still there. I also flashed my router and re-setup all the setting in it, and it did not help. Any ideas on what's at fault? If the router was bad both of the PCs would loose connection, but only one of them does how ever. I tried switching cable on the router, still no help. So I think I can rule out the Linksys router. So what's bad? |
