Cable is faster if you are the only one on, but it slows down with more users. I went with DSL.

Cable has been very good to me.
Only negative comments I've heard about DSL are the initial setup problems between the ISP & local phone company. Also, certain DSL providers assign dynamic IP addresses making it difficult to setup a home server. |

Choosing cable or DSL should not make a difference when it comes time to set up a 2 machine network. The process for both are nearly identical. All you're going to need is a router, 2 NICs, & a couple of feet of Cat5 wiring.
I run 2 machines at home using a cable connection and I've never experienced any connection problems nor slow downs. Good luck. |

I do not know where you live, but DSL quality will depend on it. I know that the Quality in the PacBell service area has been less than desirable. Cable on the other hand is very reliable.

Hi BARRACK,
I would go cable. There is less of a 'wiring' issue, as the others say. I had both! Or tried to have both, and the DSL failed because I was further away than they thought I was! The installed the whole lot then had to remove it. I was unlucky, they made a mistake, but it does show how 'distance dependent' DSL is. IF you have one machine, you just need a NIC to put in your PC. If you have two, I would use connection sharing rather than a Router - but thats a personal preference. All services depend on the number of users in your area too. In my 'local' I am the only one, so performance is like a rocket! |

Barrack, before you order anything, I suggest you check this out. www.dslreports.com (they do cable now too). They are the premier source for ISP's, prices, user experiences, you name it.

Well the last time a Cable Modem picked up an Axe to a family the sucker got 25 years.
But really that question is more a software type issue (you would still be have the same concerns with a modem |

AOL is the only ISP that I know of to have parental controls, and even they are not fool proof. If you are worried about who your kids are talking to or the material that they are viewing you need to talk to them, don't rely on your ISP to protect them.
In regaurds to your earlier post the cable provider I use is Cox.net formerly @home. They claim to give you a dynamic IP, but they really don't change it that often.
