problems networking and sharing cable connxn

I have two computers on my home network, one with WinME and the other (mine) with Win98SE. The '98 computer is a new build and everything is being freshly installed, and for one reason or another it doesn't want to network properly. I have a dialup modem and a 10/100 nic installed in it, and I have TCP/IP setup for the dialup, and TCP/IP and NetBEUI setup for the NIC. I have checked, double checked, and triple checked all physical connections on the network and the settings for the various protocols. However, my computer only sees itself in Network Neighborhood, and inexplicably cannot access the internet. The ME computer networks beautifully, accessing the internet and seeing itself and the laptop when it's plugged in. I suspect it might have something to do with this COX software, which keeps saying that I don't have an NIC bound to TCP/IP, even though I DO and the TCP/IP settings for the NIC are exactly what the manual specifies. Please help!

How are the PCs connected? Make sure you're using a known good cable or hub port or if using a hub, you can try a crossover cable to make sure it's not a bad hub.

Make sure the protocol are bound in the adapater properties in the network properties box.

if you want to see the Win98 on the WinME then make sure file and printer sharing is installed an enabled.

File and printer sharing is already installed and enabled. Sorry I forgot to mention that! Also, Client for Microsoft Networks is installed and setup.

If your trying to share one internet connection between the two computers, make sure that you have Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) installed. I had the same setup on my home network for a while...one computer with a modem and a NIC, and the other computer with just a NIC, and with ICS I was able to connect fine with both computers.

But I shouldn't need ICS if I'm using a router, should I? Sorry again, I forgot to say that both of these computers are connected to a Linksys router, which is connected to the cable modem.

are you using a dial-up connection, or a dsl connection? If your using dial-up, you'll need ICS, even with a router, because the one computer is connecting to the internet, and the other computer is having to go through that one...not through the router directly to the internet. If your using dsl, then run the dsl modem into the router, and then each computer into the router

I have cable. The cable modem is connected to the router, and the router is connected to each computer. The only thing I use the dialup modem for is to use the computer to talk on the phone.

Since you are using a router, have you ensured that the cable is a straight thru cable and not a crossover cable. Try swapping the cables between router ports to see if problem changes to other PC. Try swapping the PC's to see if problem is with cable.
