I have xp on my desktop and laptop. (both legal) and both have a network card and they have had the network icon in the tray with a red X and the balloon says: Local Area Connection...a network cable is unplugged.
Well I went and bought a Cat 5E cable plugged it in to both fired em up and both still say the same thing. I tried to run the wizzard and it still says the same thing. In properties it says that the device(network card) is enabled and working properly. Thanks!! DR |

More XP
In order to use a direct connection between two NIC equipped computers, you need a "cross-over" cable. A standard Cat5 will not work. The error messages are correct, there is no valid network connection.
The cross-over cable connects the "send" on one computer to the "receive" on the other computer and vice-versa. Standard Cat5's are "straight-thru" which would connect the "send" to the "send" and the "receive" to the "receive". Can't carry on a conversation htat way. Sorry. |
