Win Me sharing problem
I have an XP machine and an ME machine on a local network. They share an internet connection via Internet connection sharing. I can ping between the computers. Neither can "see" the other in the network neighborhood. I have shared the files and printers on the XP machine but cannot share files on the ME machine. I have checked the two boxes in the network control panel for sharing files and printers. Is it correct to assume that the ME machine must share something in order for the two machines to "see" each other? Any ideas on how to get that to happen?
Thanks Jerry |

I have heard the XP and the Windows 98 family (98, 98 2nd edition, and ME) do not network very well with a machine running XP.

Win ME Sharing Problem
They all share and play together nicely as long as you remember that Win9x and ME are the "consumer" or home versions of Windows and NT and XP are the industrial strength versions. The consumer editions have attempted to make the sharing and networking simple enough for home users. In doing so, they make a lot of assumptions and use a lot of defaults. NT and XP, since they are geared for business, provide a larger number of functions/options and therefore, require more effort to set up to work.
I have XP, NT and 98 on my network and all can share data from other machines. TO break it down 1. Make sure "file and printer sharing" is enabled on all machines 2. Make sure they are all in the same workgroup 3. Make sure you have created an account on the NT/XP machine that exactly matches the usernale being logged in to on the Win9x/ME machines. Number 3 is often the root cause when you can't share. Good luck. The Old Man |

I got $20 saying it's #2....I have ran into that myself. 98, ME, 2000, and XP all have different default workgroup names. Kinda stupid, they should've stuck to one...would've avoided alot of confusion for the average computer user.

I have WIN98 FE and XP networked thru a router with no problems. I had some problems setting it up because I used the disk that XP created on the WIN98 PC and it didn't work. Cleared all that out and set it up thru network neighboor and it is fine now. Share files back and forth, XP prints to printer on 98 PC.
