i just got pacbell's basic adsl service.
i'd like to enable a second machine to access the net through the dsl modem.(alcatel speed touch home)
sofar, i've installed the follwing additional hardware:
- one pci 10/100 nic fast ethernet card (one per machine)
- one ethernet 10 base-t 5 port hub
- rj-45 cat5 crossover cable from hub to dsl modem.
- rj-45 cat5 straight cable dsl modem to pc-1 nic.
- rj-45 cat5 straight cable (150 ft.) hub to pc-2 nic.
basic dsl comes with 1 dynamic ip address only.
pc-1 dsl connection works fine, am having trouble connecting from pc-2 though.
am planning to let pc-2 use dsl connection without running pc-1, just having dsl modem and hub up.
any suggestions how i can accomplish this?
thanks
heinz

I do not think that the cable running from the dsl modem to the hub should be a crossover cable. Try a straight cable and see if it works.

You can't plug the Alcatel into the hub unless you buy a 2nd IP address from PacBell. You have to put a second network card in one of the machines and plug the Alcatel into it. You then use Win98SE ICS or a 3rd party proxy/NAT software such as Wingate or Sygate. This is a lot cheaper than the other option, which is a Linksys DSL Router.

thanks glc for taking the time to reply. if i understand correctly, what i want to accomplish would be costlier than if i'd just keep both machines running, using pc-1 as a proxy.

Your DSL plan is for one machine only. You cannot have 2 machines running on it unless you have some kind of device or software to assign local IP addresses to both machines. The Linksys DSL Router does this very nicely, but it costs close to $200 if I recall correctly. The most economical way to do this is to buy one more network card ($15) and use Win98SE ICS (free) or proxy software (Example - Wingate Home at $40). Only the "server" (the machine with 2 network cards that the DSL modem is plugged into) needs Win98SE to use ICS - the "client" can have any Win9x version.

That is absolutly correct, I have ADSL in my my LAN (one server, two clients and sometime my laptop), going thru Wingate Home, I recomemnd to add a Firewall (Black Ice Defender is excellent and cheap), since you will have a permament connection.

thanks guys for your help. shall give the nic/nic - nic using win98se ics a shot.
question: will i be using a crossover or straight cable connecting nics pc-1 to pc-2?
the machines are abt 100ft apart.

abt. firewall, try zonealarm (abt 1.6mb) from zonelabs.com it's FREE and been doing the job just fine.
again, thank you much.

Zonealarm won't work in this scenario according to Zone Labs. You prolly have to pop for the 40 bux or whatever Blackice costs. You already have a hub with 2 straight cables, so just use them to connect the 2 machines. Plug the DSL box directly into the second NIC with a straight cable.
