Question

I have two computers networked via a crossover cable. The computer that is probably going to get the DSL connection does not have WIN98 second edition, so what are the options to share DSL. Can you just install connection sharing or do I have to completly reinstall windows. Do I even need connection sharing if I am networked via crossover cable? Any comments or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

The computer with the DSL attached has to have 98SE or you will need a 3rd party software solution. Wingate Home, for example, costs $39.95 with a 3 machine license.

And don't forget a good firewall, I recomend Black Ice Defender for $40.00 or Zonealarm for free.

Zonealarm will not work on a NAT box without lowering your protection level significantly. Blackice is a better bet in this situation.

Wingate 4.0 has a free firewall "addon" that I have not tried yet, but it looks promising.

Question

Hi GLC, do you know if Wingate 4.0 will be available to upgrade for free? I have 3.0 right now, and it works as a packet filtering along to my firewall, which is Black Ice Defender.

The upgrade is not free, but it's at a reduced price. The upgrade pricing is on the website. Example - Wingate Home 3.0 3 user to Wingate Home 4.0 3 user is $19.99, where outright its $39.99.

If your wingate is working properly and you are adequately firewalled as is, nope. Although - if all you have is 3 user Home, 20 bucks isnt much.

As I understand it, you have to lower Internet security to Medium and the internal security to Low.
