Got one computer running as server win98se, cable modem hook up to it, Sygate proxy, there will be about 7 computer sharing connection from it. Will a hub do or should a switch be used. TIA.

Depends how cheap you can find a switch as opposed to a straight hub. Switches are always better.

A hub is plenty.

it depends on the level of traffic that you have. if you are finding that are have a large number of collisions (seen as delays), then a switch will serve you well.

while the costs of switches as compared to hubs, have narrowed, switches are still a more expensive solution.

Yea, a hub in your situation is fine. While generally speaking switches are better, they can also slow things down or mess your network up if implemented improperly. You could create a heck of a bottleneck/packet mess by just throwing switches at a network latency problem.

But I digress...

In fact, it's a bad idea to throw computer equipment of any kind at a problem. Or for that matteer anywhere. It's not good for it.
....Sorry, I just couldn't resist....
