Change your IP addresses to an approved private IP range - such as 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx

I am running a network at home consisting of two PC's with 10MB PCI network cards. The machines are connected using 10baseT network cabling, and are not directly connected, but connected to a 5 port hub. The machines are connected with both the TCP/IP protocol, and IPX/SPX protocol, but the TCP/IP Protocol refuses to work correctly. I have assigned IP addresses for each of them, and have specified a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (IP addresses are 140.9.0.1 & 140.9.0.2). I can ping each of the machines, and get a response, but I only have a 25% or 50% success rate, and sometimes, all requests fail and none get through. I have re-installed the networking on both machines (Windows 98 Not SE) and updated the network drivers, but nothing seems to work. The network runs fine using the IPX/SPX protocol, but with the newer multiplayer games running on only TCP/IP, this doesnt help much. Anyone out there have any ideas I could try?

unless you are running a server somewhere, you should use "obtain ip address automatically" in the ip address field, and click use dhcp for wins resolution in the wins config tab. if theres no server to give out addresses, one of your win98 machines will elect itself dhcp server in the background and pass them out. its a feature you cant see.

Thanks for the ideas people. I have changed it to a private IP address range as suggested. I still get the occasional packet loss when pinging machines so Im not sure if perhaps there may be a problem with the cabling (Should a correctly set up network ever drop packets?). Either way, things are working now, thanks for the advice.
