Really weird problem...
Ok, this is gonna be longwinded, but here goes:
I have 3 computers on a network, 2 with win 2k and one with win 98 SE, and using a LinkSys router/hub with my cable modem. I have had this setup of a year now, when 2 weeks ago I suddenly ran into a problem. My connection became really slow on all computers, dropping from 1.3 Mbps to .083 Mpbs on average. If I shut down my computers and do a "power cycle" on the cable modem (unplug, wait for 30 seconds, then plug in and restart computers), then my connection will be as fast as it's usual self--only for about 20 min to half an hour. Then, it always drops to slow again. I called my ISP, but they said that they don't deal with routers. When I plug my cable modem directly to one computer, I don't have the problem. I thought the router might be fried so I bought a new one, but I still have the same problem. Any thoughts? |

Hi,
Have you tried different cabling and/or hub to see if that makes a difference? HTH |

Yes, I bought a new router/hub and still had the same problem. I was thinking of re-wiring the whole network, but today I updated my router's firmware and it seems to have fixed the problem. Please let me know however if you think of any other things.

If it happens again I would go buy a pre made cable depending on length away and just run it along the floor for a few days which will make the little lady real happy
and see if the problem disappears. I bet its the cabling or could have been bad firmware.

Also could be just your isp doing upgrades and plain old - you are not the prob - ask them.

I had a problem like that after my local cable co. switched to AT&T when Excite stopped providing service. For several weeks after the cutover my PC's would slod down and eventually not be able to access the net periodically. Power down both PC's, power off router, wait about 30 seconds, power router and PC's up and things would be fine.
The cutover was in February and problem cleared up after about 3 weeks and hasn't returned. Chas

Had you installed any new software before the problem began?
Try reinstalling NIC drivers. Check the NICs, one of them might be defective and sending out boadcast storms or something. Like goodcanuck said, it might be a problem on your ISP side. |

I was going to suggest the possible bad NIC also.

I'll reinstall all the NIC drivers and then get back to you.
