Networking question

My bro (Avx487) and I love the computer, we always want on at the same time, but for some reason we cant always have 2 computers. now we finally got 2 computers and dont want to fight over it anymore, he has been meaning to hook up the networking stuff for me on my computer so we can be on at teh same time. I know my computer is network capable cuz it has an icon in my control panel that says Network. I am not sure if his is though. He just upgraded to XP from 98 and I got Millenium, anybody know how to help? please reply ASAP or e-mail me at XxPsychoLaNdxX@aol.com, or aim XxPsychoLaNdxX

Thanks A lot.
Kevin

What you will need is a network card in each PC - check to see if there is one installed. Then you will need to hook the two PCs together with a cat5 ethernet cable, either directly to each other by using a crossover type cable, or hook each PC to a hub with a straight through type cable.

Once the physical connection is made, you will have to setup the networking properties on each PC. They need to be members of the same workgroup and have a common networking protocol installed.

Make sure file and printer sharing is enabled on the ME PC and set the drives or folders to be shared in the drive or folder porperties. The ME PC will also need a user name and password that is identical to one on the XP PC.

For internet connection, one PC will connect to the internet and have proxy software to allow the other PC to share the connection. AnalogX Proxy is a nice simple proxy software, or you can use the windows ICS. Of if you're have cable or dsl internet, you could use a router/hub combo and connect both PCs to the internet - and to each other - with that.

This is a brief outline. A more detailed discussion can be found here:

PC Mechanic Networking Page

For details on networking XP with ME, search through this network forum first, as most problems have been covered, and then post back if you have any additional questions...
