Wireless LAN ????

Here are the existing specs:

4 desktops
1 laptop
Currently networked via hardwire

My friend wants a wirless network. If I get a wireless hub/router (i.e Lynksis) what kind of range do we get. Can I mount it in the basement and have all machines have access? The most remote PC would be 400ft away. Walls are regular sheetrock. Cost is not a huge issue.

Thanks!

Cool

Keep in mind that distance isn't the only limiting factor. Other interference can limit siginal quality. You need to read the literature for possible distance.

Another question would be, does it have metal studs? they cause problems with wireless. You could always do a hybrid LAN to extend coverage to the farthest areas.

You can go up to 500ft but performance drops off to 1mpbs.

Things that affect wireless (2.4gHz) transimissions:

Metal (studs, filing cabinets etc)
Walls with electrical conduits running thru
Portable phones
Microwave ovens
Other wireless networks within 500 feet
X10 devices

When implementing a wireless network, the best practice (but for a home user it really isn't always practical) is to do a site survey using the tools that come with the wireless rig. Map out the coverage areas and dead spots.
