Can't browse
I have been working on a small network that has an NT 4 server and mostly Win98 workstations. I had trouble with two of the systems browsing the internet. This is an inherited problem as I just started doing this conpanies IT work recently. I finally got the two systems to browse and all was fine for a time. Then I replaced their "server" which I discovered was built around a PCChips 748LMRT, this was a budget project so I used their existing CPU and used a Tyan 1854 board instead. All went well but now the two wayward systems are again unable to browse on the internet. Anybody with some suggestions are where to look? they access the web through a Netgear router on cable internet, all the other systems work fine, they both have 3Com NIC's. I was thinking that maybe another NIC on the network was causing problems but it is isolated to these two, I also tried replacing one of the NIC's but it didn't help. They are both Dell Optiplex's.

Try assigning the problem machines static IP's in the same subnet as the router but outside its DHCP scope - and use the router's IP for gateway and DNS.

I think it assign's from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254, what would that leave me in the way of working numbers? I just don't work with the number ranges enough to remember this.

Oh, and I can see the other systems on the network and ping them, I can also ping the router and the modem, just not past there.

The Netgear is acting as the DHCP server for this network? If so, you have to disable the DHCP server service on the NT box or they will be fighting each other.
What I meant by out of scope was this - on a Linksys router the default subnet is 192.168.1.x, and the default DHCP scope is 192.168.1.100 to .149, for 50 clients. I assign static IP's from .2 to .99 when I use a Linksys to any NT boxes and print servers - and any problem computers. |

Now that I think of it I had disabled DHCP on the old server but I don't remember doing it on the new one. The funny thing is 3 other Win98 machines have no problem accessing the internet and neither does the server, just the two problem boxes. The Netgear has a range of 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.255 IIRC, so I was going to try sonething in the 192.168.1.x range instead. Thanks for jogging my brain!

If you use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, which is correct for 192.x IP's (class C), 192.168.0.x machines won't be able to see 192.168.1.x machines.

I had netBEUI on the system so it could still see the rest of the network. I tried several different settings but came away empty, still can't browse. I can ping some places but not others, I am able to ping the DNS of a former ISP, but not msn.com for example. I had DHCP client on the server but not DHCP Server.

Seems the OS's are hosed on both systems, I replaced the drives with a different one with Win2k on it and everything worked fine. I then formatted one of the systems and reloaded Win98 and now it works fine as well. I had tried un-installing and re-installing protocols and NIC's and what not but nothing else worked.
