To anyone that knows networking!!
please help me. im at my wits end. i have one computer running windows XP home, and another one running win98SE. they both have a 3com etherlink card, and are linked together using a crossover cable. i have set up the connection that (i tihnk) is correct, and for brief periods, it works. when it works, i can share printers/files/inet, and both computers are on the network neighborhood, however, it seems to only work intermitantly. sometimes, i try to access the network places on the XP computer, and i can only see one computer, so i set up the IP again on both, and sometimes it works again. but it stops working frequently, and so i have to set it all up again. the old computer (win98se) has the internet gateway program, but when i try to load it up (usually when the network is being a nuisance) it says a server cant be found. sometimes the network works really well, but then it seems to stop working WITHOUT ME CHANGING ANY OF THE SETTINGS!! ARRGG. Please help me
PLease!! Arbz

make sure all of the connections are good and the drivers are up to date. also when i networked an XP and a 98 i used the winXP disc to load the XP networking stuff. my network has given me no problems whatsoever so far either. i think when you put the cd in it's under the perform other operations or something like that on the menu that pops up. good luck, and i'm sure some other people on the mech can help you a little more.

hi. thanks for the reply. ive installed the gateway using the windows XP CD, but whenever the computer is turned on, the little icon in the taskbar doesnt come on, and the computer doesnt connect to the internet. are there any specific ip addresses or other settings that i need to make sure i have?
at the moment, here are the IP addresses: XP computer: IP address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 and the 98 computer: IP address: 192.168.0.2 'Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 thanks |

Those two should work just fine. Are you specifying the IPs in each machine or is the XP machine being DHCP for the other?

arbzask,
Try the suggestions at this link http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...innetprobs.htm Note the reference to default protocol and the caveats regarding the way you login. These are often the cause of these issues. Good luck. The Old Man |
