Question on networking

I have two PCs, one with WinXP Pro and the other with Win98SE. I want to be able to set the up so that the can share my Earthlink DSL connection (i.e. be online at the same time). I think I know how to do this but aren't 100% sure. Could you guys just let me know what hardware/software I need to accomplish this? Thanks

No software is required. Windows already has it built in.

For hardware, you will need a NIC (Network Interface Card) for each machine, usually about $20. You will also need a router, and I recommend the Linksys BEFSR41 4-port router. Works great, and you can get one for under $100. You already have the DSL connection, so I assume you already have the DSL modem. Thats about it, other than the CAT5 cable.

Hi Surge1243,

BFD is right, you need two NICs, and a router.

See my post here Some very good deals on parts this weekend... for some killer deals this weekend. You can get the aforementioned hardware for about $60 after rebates this weekend.

I have the above mentioned setup and the linksys router is the best improvement I've gotten since DSL. You can uninstall all of your ISP's software off of your machines, you're always connected and you can block any of your PC's from reaching the internet, and it is password protected to get into the router's settings. I have the model with the 4-port switch built in and use MYPC, KIDSPC, AND laptop all can be cruising the internet way faster than either one could ever on dialup. I'm looking for one of those little mini print servers for that fourth port so any of the 3 PC's will be able to print without having to have the main PC on!
Best 99 dollars I think I ever spent on any PC related device was definately that router!
