Need to transfer music files to my downstairs computer..network card?

Sup tech people-

I need to find a fast way and co$t effective way to transfer my music on my laptop to my downstairs computer which has my CD-RW internal. As you might have guessed, I have 56k.

I was wondering if I could buy a 10/100 Network card for my downstairs computer b/c I already have one on my laptop and a Category 5 cable and hook it up to my laptop. That would be cheaper than buying an external burner but would it work?

Also, if it does work, do I have to have my computer I am uploading to dialed up to the internet or will it just connect via the cat5 cable/network card?

How do you suggest I send the data -fastest? I can send via Aol Instant Messenger or ICQ...any other faster ways?

I appreciate any help, take care.

-Steve

Since NIC's are pretty cheap (you can get decent fast ethernet cards for $15), I'd add a NIC in your downstairs computer if there's a free slot for the NIC.

Then just connect both PCs with a crossover cable and transfer the music.

Steve25:

You won't need either of the PC's connected to the Internet.

As long as the PC with the files to transfer has file sharing enabled and you are sharing the relevant folder/drive, then you can browse across in Network Neigbourhood and copy/paste them over.

Just be sure that each PC has been set up with a different IP number in the TCP/IP settings for the NIC

eg 192.168.1.1
and 192.168.1.2

with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Don't forget to turn file sharing off afterwards, unless you're running some firewall software, because this will enable nosy hackers to look at all your files.

Send a message via Yahoo to BFD Deadeye
If you just want a temporary solution to transfer a few files, use a USB cable, or parallel cable.
