Alright folks, got the NIC on my computer with the CD-RW on it. I also got an RJ45 cable that works for both of them.
What I really need help is a detailed, brief explanation of how the hell I can connect my CD-RW comp to my Laptop to send music. I've spent a few hours trying diff combo's. On my laptop is win xp pro, and win 98 on my cd-rw comp. I don't know what to do on my win 98 comp to connect the two comps. thanks in advance! -Steve |

Steve25,
Unless your cable is a cross-over cable, you're SOL. It won't work. If it is, all you should need to do is plug it in to each of the computers. Go into the network control panel and set an IP address on each of the computers. Make sure they are in the same range, e.g. make your laptop 192.168.10.1 and the CDRW machine 192.168.10.2. Give them both a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Save the config and close the control panel. On your laptop, open a command prompt and type "ping 192.168.10.2" without the quotes. If you get a reply, you're connected! Select a folder on the CDRW machine where you want to copy the files, let's say "Music" and "share" it. Do this by right-clicking on the folder and selecting "Sharing ..." THen check the box to allow this folder to be shared. Save the config and close. You will not see the computers in the network neighborhood. You will need to map a drive from the laptop to the CDRW machine. In the Windows Explorer, select Tools > Map Network Drive. Pick a drive letter. In the address use, "\\192.168.10.2\Music" without the quotes. If that works, you have the connection and can just drag and drop the files from your laptop to the CDRW machine. Hope that helps. The Old Man |

Stay with the NIC cards they will work just fine. If your using Win98 you need to log on with a username and password (when Win boots up dont hit ESC or Cancel) when both computers are hooked together and logged on just use 'find computer' from the start button, you will need to know the name of both computers. You should then be able to access one computer to the other from 'network neighborhood' on the computer that has the CD/RW right click and hit 'sharing' there you can set the access rights (read only, full or password) It's not that much work and it's way better.
