Problem setting up a network

Hi, I am in need of some assistance in setting up a network.
Two computers, numbered 1 and 2
both machines running Win '95
Using RoadRunner
have the machines connected to a Focus Network hub and the hub to a D-Link DI-704 router through the uplink on the hub to port 4 on the router. RR is plugged into the WAN plug on the back of router.
The network is working as I can access files etc on computer 1 from computer 2 and files on computer 2 from computer 1.
The problemm is trying to set up the router.
Instructions say to configure the router I should type the DI-704's address into Internet Explorer. When I do this I recv an error message, if I remember correctly, it read 'Unable to access'.
When I try to access my mail or the web through IE I cannot and receive error messages, lost connection, timed out, unable to locate the RR homepage etc.

Any suggestions as to what I have to do to configure the router and be able to access my RR account through the network.

I haven't set one up using WIN95 but if it has Network Neighborhood, right click and select properties, highlight your TCP/IP associated with your NIC and select Properties. Check Obtain Address Automatically and make sure Gateway is unchecked.

Also with a 4 port router, you don't need the hub. Just plug the PC's into the router ports. That may be the reason you cain't see the router to configure it.

Disconnected from the hub. Have the computers plugged dorectly to the router. Checked the TCP/IP for the NIC and have Obtain Address Automatically checked and Gateway is unchecked/ no addresses listed in the Gateway box.
When I type in the DI-704's address into Internet Explorer I am now recv on the bottom of the IE screen 'Detecting proxy server' and it just stays there and I am unable to access the router, or RR.

On your TCP/IP properties, WINS tab, make sure "Use DHCP" is checked. In Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings, UNcheck all boxes (automatically detect settings in particular, remove all proxy entries). You may have to download the Winsock 2 update from M$ if your 95 doesn't already have this installed.

After you have checked all this, reboot the modem, then reboot the router, then reboot the computer - then run WINIPCFG, select your NIC in the dropdown box, then click More Info - and either take a screen shot and post it as an attachment or copy down everything it says and post it.

I have followed your above instructions and the only one that I had to uncheck was the automatically detect settings.
Still no luck with the router config or internet access.

The router is not doing its job or you need to release and renew your lease. The DHCP server address in winipcfg should be the internal IP of the router, not your ISP's as what is appearing. Run winipcfg again, click on Release All, then Renew All. Does the router have a hard reset to factory defaults available?

Ran winipcfg again and released all, msg came back said had already been released. then did a renew all and recv an error msg
"DHCP Server Unavailable: Renewing adapter."
No hard reset. From looking at the pamphlet that came with the router you can reset to factory defaults from the config menu but you have to go through IE and enter the address for the router to get to the menu and I haven't been able to get to the config.

What is the router's default internal address?

Let's say it's 192.168.1.1, just because that's what Linksys's router is and that's the one I am familiar with. If this is the case, set the TCP/IP properties manually on your nic. Make the IP address 192.168.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.1, enable DNS, put anything in the HOST block (I use my machine name), add 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server. If 192.168.1.1 is not the default router address, substitute the correct one for the gateway and DNS and make the IP address of the card ONE number higher (as I did in the example). Reboot and then try browsing into the router. When you get in, make sure the DHCP server is enabled and you can go back to the original settings on your NIC. If you still can't get in, call D-Link, the router sounds like it's fried.

D-Link router uses 192.168.0.1, there is a reset button on the front of the router. The address needs to be typed in as, http://192.168.0.1

Is the reset like Linksys - hold it in for 15 seconds to do a hard reset to factory defaults? I would certainly try that before setting up static IP like I described.

Found the reset on the roter, no button, just a hole and tried that with a screwdriver and was still not able to get in to the config.
The good news is that i returned the D-link as defective and purchased a Siemens router. Piece of cake install and set up. Network is now up and running. The Siemens router in addition to the four ports, plus wan, and com ports also has a printer port. This is the only thing that I can not get to work. Did the setup from the CD and rebooted. Printer is hooked up to the router printer port. I am getting a error message that the test that I was trying to run from Notepad was unable to print etc. It is a HP1100A, Laserjet printer.
Just happy to have the network up and running.

Have you added the network port to the printer setup on each workstation? Before you try Notepad, try a Windows test page.

You lost me again. How do I add the network port to the printer setup?

You will have to read the manual for exact instructions - right now, if you go to the properties of the printer and click the Details tab, what port is it printing to? It isn't supposed to be "LPT1" any more, it needs to be some kind of network port. Software probably needs to be installed on each workstation to do this.
