finding remote ip address

i was wondering if there is any way to find a remote ip address, say for instance, i'm out of town with my laptop and i want to use VNC (the AT&T remote control thing) to access my home computer which has a dynamic ip address (with cable internet). is there any way i can find out my home computers ip address remotely, or somehow have it automatically e-mail it to me or something? thanks for the help as always...

If you have a cable modem, generally speaking it won't release it's IP address and renew a new one. You should be able to write down the IP on your home machine and use it wherever/whenever.

Of course I don't know who your cable provider is, but on mine at home the IP hasn't changed since I got the service about 3 months ago. I also have others at work who have cable modems (with different providers than me) where their IP hasn't changed in a year. YMMV

If what Dave says isn't true and your IP keeps changing, maybe you can use one of the dynamic DNS services and connect using name instead of IP.

i've been checking my ip, and it does seem to stay the same...heh, i guess i should have checked that before, but AT&T made it very clear that it was a dynamic ip address and that it would change. i dunno what's up with that, but thanks, i figured it out, now it's just a matter of getting through my router and firewall, thanks...

Yea, they like to "scare" you so you don't run servers on the line.
